"The Sacred Bark", as specifically known by the American Indians. This nature's best, is also known by several other names, including, Purchina Bark, Persian Bark. Bear Wood, Holy Bark, Christ's Thorn, Bearberry, and Chittam Bark. In England it is known as Rhamni Purshiani cortex, in France as Cascara Sagrada and in Germany as Amerikanisch Faulbaumrinde. It was used as conventional medicine as early as 1877 . By 1878 it was available pharmaceutically as a nauseous and bitter fluid extract for use in chronic constipation. First imported to Europe in 1883, this herb is the natural laxative and body tonic. Cascara Sagrada, a North American native plant from British Columbia to Washington State is normally grows in the coniferous woodlands on mountain ridges and cave walls. A Spanish priest found Indians using it and was so impressed with its mildness and efficiency that he called it holy bark. Hence its name.
